Music Within You

It seems as if each piece of music creates a space within you, I can't tell for sure if it is in the mind or in the heart, although it feels like it is within the heart.

This space is unique in size and shape for each piece of music. It may take several hearings for the shape to fully form itself, developing its own size and contours. Once this space is finished, listening to the piece of music again the notes fill that space in an increasingly rich and familiar way. This richness and familiarity continues to grow as you really listen again and again, and even has some hint of color to it.

Several weeks ago Cameron, Bethany and I attended a concert in the Tabernacle in Salt Lake performed by the Orchestra at Temple Square. The musical fare included The Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla by Glinka, several selections from Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky as well as hit Pathetique Symphony, number six I believe. The encore was Massenet's Meditation from Thais.

I was familiar to some degree with and had enjoyed previously all these pieces, that being one of the reasons I wanted to attend the concert. It was wonderful to fill the spaces within me!

  1. Yes, that is a good explanation for the emotional response we have to well-loved music. Just the other day I was listening to the oldies station: Time Keeps on Slippin slippin into the future, Spirit in the Sky, Evil Woman, Downtown, Here Comes the Sun, Blackbird, Forever Young, Bad Moon Rising, Joy to the World by 3 dog night, and Beautiful Day by U2; it was delightful! ;)
